Design principles

Design principles describe how YDS designs in general. They apply across all of Yle's services and every component, and they explain the intent behind design decisions rather than prescribing a specific solution.

Principles, patterns and components

  • Design principles set the direction, for example how motion guides the user and adds expression.
  • Patterns apply that direction to one recurring user need, such as choosing a location or giving feedback on an action.
  • Components are the building blocks both of them are realised with.

When a pattern or a component makes a design decision, it should follow these principles. If a decision conflicts with a principle, raise it with the design system team instead of working around it.
